Akumal Bay Beach and Wellness Resort Reviews

Pleasant repairs. Nothing to whine about here
Visited this hotel 1St week of April. Sincerely if you gotta whine then you will likely find something here to whine about as well. Two adirondack seats just steps from the sea, jacuzzi on patio, 24 hour in room meal service, plunge pools throughout and bar service all over! ! We had actually no criticisms with this resort. Shore is a little bit rockey to the right side of hotel however where the tortoises are always seen to the left. It is pleasant and clear. Meals were wonderful in all restaurants. Particularly the gourmet. Love the sushi bar at the shore and the fast lunchtime cafeteria set up at the refreshment cafe. More recliners needed around the shore area however I'm sure they're still working on corrective this! Enjoy!
Awesome hotel - we will return next year!
Akumal Bay shore & Wellness hotel We returned on April 14 after a 10-day stay at this awesome hotel. There are a few things that set this hotel Apart from most other in the Caribbean: - amazing client service ( all the personnel, including supervisor - that keeps a tight rein on their staff) - really relaxed environment (hence the "Wellness" in the title) - free in room meal service (excluding liquor) - no trouble shore towel policy (essentially you can pick up your towels on tables by the ocean and pool, and throw the used ones in a laundry-kind basket, no questions inquired, no cards to exchange) - no booking needed for all five specialty restaurants (and you can have supper there as on several occasions you enjoy). The hotel is not big and this gives it character (after 7 days you come to know most other visitors) and you do not have to confront big crowds near the ocean, at the swimming pool or in the restaurants. The suite We stayed in block 1 (closest /20 meters to the shore! ) which is brand new, interior and exterior, including the newly installed lifts. The suite on 1St floor was really roomy, with a great king-size+ Bed and contemporary furniture. On the terrace there is only one seat however you can contact a security guard near the ocean or the reception and ask for 1-2 plastic seats and a tiny plastic table. They're really responsive to client demands/criticisms. For example, following a few criticisms regarding a support for shower gel/shampoo in the shower, they have installed them, during our time, in all suites. The minibar in the suite is well filled however if you would like more of something (beer, coca cola, chocolate, potato cookies, juice) just leave a note in the mini bar (finally with a small tip) for the man who services the minibar. You will find them when you return from the shore in the afternoon. All suites are sea-view and have a hot tub. Shore and restaurants The shore and sea are excellent and spotless, and some days you do not even need to walk the 7-10 minutes to the official Akumal shore (famous for its scuba diving and deep sea diving) to see some tortoises and coloured fish. The female servers serving beverages on shore are really supportive, quick and really diligent. Jasmine is the most outstanding. The cafeteria provides a wide selection of options (vegies, meats, fish, seafood, pasta, pizza, and so on. ) always fresh and delicious. There is a sushi bar by the ocean and it's pleasant to sit down sipping a drink in the wind and watching the sushi cook preparing your sushi variety. The bar staff, carlos and samuel know their stuff and will always supply your drink with a smile. We did not try any of the specialty restaurants (the variety and quality of cuisine at the cafeteria was too excellent! ) however our friends went to the gourmet (French/mediterranean) and the brazilian barbecue and they told that they liked it. The main outdoors bar (and dance floor) close to the cafeteria provides Live bands nighly. Determined by the crows and the band, some night turn into a Real party with many dance and fun. The entertainment group have put together two performances - a latino performance and a'70s performance that proved to be Real fun and amusing. The only critique we would like to raise (and I hope someone in the supervisor is reading these remarks) is the fact that they spend a ton of money on a dance club block (right across from the main foyer, close to the parking lot) and they do not advertise it at all. I bet most visitors have no idea what is in that block (no sign, no direction, even though it's open every evening and it stays empty. ). Tips & recommendations - the little town of Akumal shore (not be confounded with Akumal Pueblo across the freeway) is 7-10 minutes walk near the ocean (head North) and it's got a few convenience shops, a gas station, a drug store and a few gift stores. We found prices a little bit steep in the gift stores. - for you smokers out there, typical American smokes (camel, marlboro, and so on. ) cost about US$5/pack at the gas station and in the shops, however only US$2. 50 or less in the duty free store at the Cancun airport. Tequila is also really well priced at the airport. - cab fare to/from riviera Maya (about 1/2 hour Drive on the freeway) is approximately. US$30 - US $40. -the Cozumel excursion is a lost cause and quite costly (nearly US$150/person) for what you get. You are more than likely better off doing it on your own with a cab to riviera Maya and ferry boat ticket to Cozumel. Conclusion Akumal Bay hotel is a great site to spend your holiday and we'll surely go there the in the future.

Stellar hotel
We visited Akumal Bay shore and Wellness hotel from April 14-21. I was a little worried after reading testimonials of a busy shore and a race to get a sun bed by 6 AM however this wasn't the case. The hotel was certainly at capacity however you could not tell. Shore- Yes the shore and seats are taken early infront of block#1, as this is the most pleasant swimming part of the shore, however there are a lot of seats and shade available still infront of block#3, and#4. We favoured this area anyway as it is quieter. At 10 AM, there were still available recliners and shade in this area. You just have to walk about 100 feet away to swim which is not a major deal. The folks at the hotel do try their hardest to make your experience pristine. - they work really Hard. There was kelp near the ocean however this isn't their fault. They employees slug away to get rid of it. Scuba diving is awesome. Lots of ocean tortoises, Eagle rays, sting rays, and a selection of colourful fish. Cuisine- Cuisine was always great. I favoured the sushi bar however my hubby favoured the brazilian restaurant. Ate a wide selection of seafood, salad, chicken and so on. And never got ill! Sanitation- They're always tidying! Service is awesome! Majority of workers excellent you with a smile. We did have one giant millipede in our suite however what do you anticipate in a Tropical place. It was nothing to do with not being spotless! We watched an iguana zip into our neighbours suite Under the door one night and we did hear them yelling a few hours later. When we talked to them they did tell us they found an iguana in their suite. We always put a towel at night Under the door. Suites- We had a gigantic suite with excellent oceanview! It did not get tidied often until around 4 PM which was a drag and one day they forgot fully to come although a telephone Call had them up their immediately. Bar mini bar was always filled well! Lots of water bottles. We also had a bucket of ice with sparkling wine and a wonderful flower displace and fruit basket. Pleasant touch! Wonderful duvet and comfortable beds! We honestly had a queen and a king in our suite with a lot of space still! Nightly shows- It was the one area that could improve. They only had a band/singer at night. Most music sounded like lounge music. Really low card. Two days later they were back and played the precise same songs! Two other days they had another band that was a little more upbeat. However again played some of the same songs that we heard two days formerly! Spa- My hubby and I had a Couples massage looking over the shore. Charming! Yes costly however worth it! We often do not return to the same hotel two times, however would consider this one however am concerned that the shore will be way too busy when Secrets is done. We will have to read testimonials and see! We would endorse this hotel for sure to anybody!

Fantastic hotel- 3rd time here!
We stayed here for 10 days from April 11 to 21/2015. The upgrade is wonderful. The personnel and supervisor are really courteous and friendly. Always greeting you with a smile. We stayed in block 4 which is the south end of the hotel. Every patio has a hot tub jacuzzi that fits 2 folks comfortably. The only thing I did not like was that there was only 1 seat to sit on. In front of each building is a pool. New to the hotel, and an excellent idea! The beds in the suites are really pleasant, and the cushions are soft and fluffy. The hedge or bushes that lined the walkways are gone and flowers are in their place. The 24 hour ocean bar is a special gift for those who get the late night munchies or still wish to have fun a little bit longer. The oceanfront is as wonderful as always. You May have to get up early to get a tiki hut, however that is the same nearly all over. There are 4 specialty restaurants, with no booking required. The theater in the front of the hotel is Now a dance club and the renos in there are really pleasant. It used to be really hot and muggy in there however Now it is quite pleasant. I liked this hotel as a 3 1/2 star and it is even better as a 5 star. We'll surely return!

Really fun week
We travelled to the Akumal shore and Wellness hotel from April 12th to 19th. The hotel lived up to all the other favourable testimonials which I read before heading there. The personnel are always really accommodating, whether you are near the ocean, around the swimming pool, in the 4 specialty restaurants or at the cafeteria. I requested a suite in block 3 or 4 and we were placed in block 4. The view from the suite was excellent. We were right in front of one of the small pools, however we spent our days around the central swimming pool so did not take advantage of it. There was a bar close by and towels beside the bar, so it would've been a great place to spend the day, however not large enough for my 13 year old son to enjoy. We went out paddleboarding a few times. My hubby and son went daily. I never found my balance, however they did really well, and truly liked it. The scuba diving was excellent. We borrowed vests from the on-site Dive store one day, however when we went other days they were all borrowed, it was too bad that folks took them for the whole day. My hubby and I floated well without the vest, however my son had problems, so did not go scuba diving again. We stayed all 4 specialty restaurants. Our favorite was the gourmet. The oriental dining house was a close second. The brazilian was fascinating to visit, however did not interest us enough for another visit. As others have told, only the gourmet restaurant needs the guys to wear Long trousers. All of the meals at the specialty restaurants began off with a highlight drink. The cafeteria was excellent and had some variation from every day. We really liked the pasta station. 3 different pastas and 3 different sauces, and different toppings that you Select for the cook to cook up for you. There is house red and white wines available with all the meals, we tried both. The red was alright, I did not enjoy the white, however that May just be my taste. We did not pay extra to order off the wine menu. We claimed a bali Bed most days and enjoyed the setting right by the swimming pool, yet not too far from the shore. They did not get claimed too early. The recliners with tiki huts in front of blocks 1 and 2 were claimed mostly early. Unsure what time. There were always tiki huts in front of blocks 3 and 4 available. The entertainment personnel was many fun, however not aggressive to get folks involved. We played volleyball, and did the exercise class and zumba in the swimming pool. I also did yoga a couple times in the Wellness center, past block 4. Charming spot to do yoga. The suite was excellent. I am unsure what time the housekeeper came, however when we got back from our day at the swimming pool everything was spotless and clean. Also we'd get housekeeper service occasionally while we were at dinner, to tidy up our wet towels and give us fresh ones. The mini bar was always supplied with soda, beer, cookies and a chocolate bar, pleasant for a pre-dinner quick meal. The air conditioning was mostly noisy and did not cool the suite enough at night. The Bed has just a duvet in a cover, which I found too warm, so I found I was too cool without covers or too warm with them. I think in the future I will bring a sheet. We were on the first floor so had the 2 adirondack seats. We never used the hot tub, it just appeared in the way. As a whole we really enjoyed the week and would like to come back again.

Awesome holiday - we are going to be back for our 6th vacation really promptly
This was our sixth vacation to abr and we introduced my sister and her spouse to their first all-inclusive vacation to Mexico. The repairs are more or less done and they're still working on the lifts. The beds are so pleasant as are the cushions. We first began coming to this hotel when it was a four star and liked it then, and we adore it even more Now. The staff attention is top tier from my housekeeper Perla in block two, to my favourite barman clemente and waiter Juan. We had excellent service from a lot of others. Maria near the ocean works her tail off all day and always has a smile for you. These folks work very tough and we tipped accordingly. We really liked the sushi ocean bar most days for lunch and beverages. The refreshment cafe by the swimming pool was our favourite place to hang out in the late afternoons. We also enjoyed the bar between the two gourmet restaurants in the afternoon as the furniture was pleasant, the wind was excellent and the staff attention amazing. I was really happy that the cameraman was there with the exoctic creatures to pose with. We stayed in block 2 first floor and liked our suite. We often go third floor for the view, however Due to my sister having a bum knee we stayed first level and liked it. Next vacation we are going to be trying the penthouse. I do worry about the shore for the Turtle laying season that is promptly approaching. I hope that supervisor reads this. I think if the seats were stacked up nighly that the papalas should not be a problem. I do worry that the Bay is gonna be jam-packed one time Secrets opens. I really think that the outdoors snorkel trips should be discontinued as the tortoises are being constantly harassed and the public end of the Bay is very jam-packed. I agree with the other testimonials about the pressure of the water and temp in the shower, however hopefully this will be resolved by our future vacation. This is my favourite place to come and feels like home from the moment I check in until the tear filled morning that I leave. I have only been home in alberta for 5 days and I wish I could jump on an aircraft and return to my other home under the sunshine in Akumal. To all the Akumal Bay personnel, keep up the great work and hope to see you all again in July 2015 for my 50th birthday. Special hats off to wilbert for the greatest morning coffee's in the bar by the front desk. We remained for 10 days April 8-18/15 travelled as a couple and liked every second of it. Supervisor please rectify the one thing missing in the suites is the do not agitate sign to hang on the door if you should want to rest in or if you are feeling ill or just needing a nap. I hope the suites will have them before my next vacation.

 Value
Awesome setting, courteous personnel, excellent value
I have stayed in this hotel two times Now - its a Gem in Cancun, leave the beat bars and party scene by the airport and Travel 45 minutes south (10 minutes south of Playa) to Akumal Bay - you will never be disappointed and it will be the low card Caribbean vacation you imagined. Akumal is a simi sleepy community that will delight you. The community is really contained and safe, lots for families to do and really intimate. This area is where the ocean tortoises come and nest, we have been there when giant tortoises come out, build a nest and lay the eggs - awesome experience. This hotel in in the process of transformation and rebuilding into a mega hotel, as of May 2014 it was pretty outdated although an excellent value for the money. One time the add on hotel is done, its gonna be a destination Property and worth every dollar! If you are on a budget and can get into the older portion of the hotel, do it, the suites are big and have everything you need, its not Luxury however its not terrible, just old. When the new resort open, go - the area is superb, the personnel are fascinating, the amusement is fun!

Just about pristine!
We stayed April 14-20 for our first visit here. We found a wonderful hotel where all suites face the sea. We were in block 2 with a pristine scenery of the pool and sea. Blocks and ground were spotless and well cared for. Personnel were nearly always amazing. There are a lot of (overall! ) favourable remarks for this hotel. We really liked the view. Every morning and every evening it was just wonderful. Our accomodations were big. The mattress was pleasant. The blanket May have been a little bit warm but the fabric was so pleasant, as were the cushions, that this isn't really a criticism. There is air conditioning and a roof fan (pleasant for drying wet things! ). The washroom is sort of open (sink area is open with frosted glass doors to the shower and washroom. This was okay for us however if you are traveling and sharing a suite with somebody you do not know intimately, this could be rough. No sound fence for the washroom area! We really liked the deck and used it constantly. This is odd for us, since we seldomly spend time on decks at resorts. This one had a whirlpool jacuzzi on each deck (which we did not use as such, however worked excellent for a fresh water rinse for our diving gear). Mornings after sunrise the deck was hot however at night it had an excellent wind and we could listen to the Live music from the bar lounge. There are bath salts given, so if somebody wanted a pleasant bath, it was a choice. We tried a lot of of the restaurants at the hotel and enjoyed them all, except the sushi bar, which was just alright. We never arrived at the gourmet restaurant since it needs Long trousers and had few choices for vegans (we had one in our company). There were not a lot of choices for vegans at most restaurants other than the cafeteria and sandwich station, even though they tried Hard. All cuisine was excellent [except for the so-so sushi]. Personnel were more than inclined to help, even carrying a mug of coffee back when we walked up to the bar asking for a replenish. One perk was that the bars not only have coffee, however latte beverages and frappuccinos. There are a lot of covered areas and seats for the shore. Various bali beds for the swimming pool. Get there early and reserve your spot since they go quick. That is absurd however there is restricted shore space. Appears another hotel is also being built next door so space May become even less in the future. They work diligently to tidy the shore up. There are some rocks but one can see the sand to ease oneself into the warmest water we have ever had. Really close are some pleasant Coral formations for scuba diving. We saw a few rays and even a Turtle with two attached remora. This hotel is a marvelous place for divers. The diving, in comparison to Cozumel, is not excellent, however here the water is warm and the diving is simple. The coral reefs seemed healthy however we never saw anything fantastic. On site is a marvelous company [Akumal-Dive. Ca] that charges by the Dive. Dives are only 1 tank dives and the walk to the boat area is simple. We liked our Dutch divemaster. So courteous and an excellent divemaster, making for an optimal experience. The water was so warm and the boat lift was really short, making for Long bottom times. Provided the hot tubs on each deck that can be used for rinsing gear, this is an excellent Dive hotel. Criticisms are few however May be essential for others as well. The water in the shower wouldn't maintain a stable temp. We ducked between too hot and too cool episodes. That was a challenge sometimes. It could be burning hot and then really cool within seconds. Pressure of the water in the shower was always minor. There is a pleasant mini bar in the suite that has Waters, beer, sodas, a small chocolate bar and potato cookies. Compared to ever other resort we have ever stayed in, this was replenished everyday without extra fees! In spite of this, when we wanted extra water/pop to take with us on a tour, we were told to pay extra to get the particular things we wanted. Seriously? We had not used most of what was in our mini bar. In fact, we only used some water and one diet coca cola and chocolate. I'd have traded the unused merchandise to get what we wanted. The hotel is all-inclusive. Why add that on top? We have been to Mexico on several occasions and this time we had awesome wi-fi. In fact, it was likely some of the most amazing we have had anywhere. My son could facetime his girlfriend from his suite. It is included in the all-inclusive choice, which is also pleasant. It is, but, not secured. It does not reach to restaurants however does work for the swimming pool area and close in near the ocean. The shore has stand-up paddle boards available, however they can only be used when escorted with hotel personnel. We have paddle boarded before; we have a sup! Nevertheless, we had to go with personnel and follow a short, particular way. Turns out the personnel took extra time to do headstands on their paddle board (which was really cool) however would not give us extra time or change their way. Times listed for paddle boarding trips were subject to significant variability. Our last day listed the last choice as 4:00 PM. We looked for somebody from 2:30 on and at last found him about 3:15. He informed us we could not go out anymore since there was gonna be a wedding and he had to put the paddleboards away. We never saw a wedding and shore volleyball appeared to be okay. For the 8 minutes our one paddle board session lasted (yes, we used our forerunner and timed it), I think we should have been permitted to go out once again. More choices for activities near the ocean would have been pleasant. Pedal boats would be fun. I watched the water aerobics a little bit. Wild! I do not think the personnel were trained in anything exercise related. They did old person arm swings, and so on. I saw a little bit of dancing on the swimming pool deck however I would not have called it zumba. They list pilates. I never saw it. Perhaps it is held somewhere else? We walked to the yoga area however did not really figure out what happened there. Guided walks, or other choices would be appreciated. As for the "Wellness" aspect of the hotel - we had a scale in our suite, which was honestly quite pleasant, however restricted choices beyond that. There were egg whites (without yolks) available at the cafeteria. Other than that, we experienced nothing that would warrant the term "Wellness". One last criticism is sound. For the most part, this was pleasant peaceful hotel, as we wanted. The exception is the music from the bar. We understand that folks have different musical tastes (and the music itself varied from pleasant to terrible), however there was no need for the intense volume. Folks sitting in the bar were, of course, really not too far from the band. Turning down the volume by Half would still have been noisy for them. Why does the volume have to be so noisy that one can truly feel it in one's chest while trying to rest? This is "Wellness"? The sound finished between 10:30&11:00 which is not too late however we had wanted to get up before sunrise to run and hike throughout the cooler part of the day. Sadly, this was only possible one time, when the band completed earlier than typical. If we had wanted to listen to thunderous sound all evening Long, we'd have stayed in Cancun instead of a "Wellness" hotel. Our criticism to the reception was answered with, "it is a Live band [so no, we will not do anything about it]". We do want to emphasize that in spite of these criticisms, this is an excellent hotel. We're including them overall in the hope that a few enhancements will be made before our next vacation, which will hopefully be promptly.

Finest shore, wonderful place.
Came back here for the repairs, and it is pretty awesome. Only apprehension will be the crowds that come here, as I am unsure this little shore can handle it, and it will most definitely impact the Turtle population. The hotel itself if wonderful and has excellent service, no criticisms at all. The restaurants have awesome cuisine, and the cafeteria always has a great variety. The jacuzzi on the deck is a pleasant touch, however unsure how this fits into their environmentally courteous image. We were there when the hotel was still Under renovation, so only at a quarter of capacity. I can not conceive what it will be like when it is full, as there are restricted shore beds and space. Hopefully they can help everybody, as it is a really wonderful spot. Anybody who has been here before the reno will mention the apprehension of the crowds killing off the tortoises. It's correct, the crowds have grown dramatically. Scuba diving is challenging to do without bumping into other folks. And everybody attempts to touch the tortoises, or take home some Coral. It's worrying, and I hope they can somehow Preserve this spot. However with a lot of travelers coming here and Now another large hotel being built next door, this little Gem May promptly kill off its main attraction.
